Well, this was a book that certainly caught me off guard!
This novel is a collision between the obvious Lolita narrative, the bohemian childhood captured in The Strays by Emily Bitto, and a surprise thriller in a #metoo context. Quite the combination!
We follow three characters and their perspectives looking back on a childhood encounter that changed all of their lives. While the three are pitched at indicating a victim, a perpetrator, and a witness perspective, I felt like these lines blurred as the novel progressed.
For those who might be deterred by the Lolita comparisons, I actually felt like this was a much more empowering perspective on the issues that novel evokes. Certainly this was helped by the multiple perspectives this is told from.
This is so well written and a compelling page turner, definitely have a read when it comes out on 18 August 2018. Thanks to Harper Books for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
